THE ECONOMICS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

Course overview:

This course discusses the economics of the European Union.

  • The objective is to analyze the configuration and evolution of the EU since its foundation to this day and the main challenges Europe faces as a major player in the international arena as well as one of the most consolidated economic space of cooperation and growth in the world.

  • Along this two- week course, the major macro-economic issues will be examined:
    • Monetary unification and monetary policy in the Euro area
    • Innovation
    • Competitive policies
    • EU enlargement
    • Cooperation and trade

Each of the topics will be presented in light of modern economic theories and empirical evidence and will include selectedvisits to some of the most relevant companies in town operating in a European scale, in order to provide the student with a robust understanding of the key elements of the European economy and its managerial challenges from the business perspective.

*The course consists of ten sessions, 2 hours each.

 

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

Strategic management is an upper level-course that integrates the major business disciplines of economics:

  • Finance
  • Investments
  • Management
  • Marketing
  • Statistics and quantitative methods.

It is designed to give current and future managers, leaders, entrepreneurs, and others tools and techniques they need to successfully formulate and implement organizational strategies (vision, mission, goals/objectives, action plans, inter alia) to achieve a competitive advantage that yields superior financial performance while maintaining quality and providing excellent customer service.


Using case studies, current readings in strategic management, internet and information technology resources, students will develop critical and analytical tools to:

  • think strategically,
  • conduct strategic analysis
  • craft and implement optional, integrated business strategies using managerial judgment based upon socially responsible ethical and organizational principles and behavior.
  • To acquaint students with the managerial tasks associated with implementing and executing company strategies
  • To have students become more proficient in using personal computers to do managerial analysis and managerial work.
